Welcome to "Faszination Comic", one of the focal themes of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2002. The programme is presented to you by comic.de, Germany's leading comics website.
All good things come in threes! And this year too, the Comics Centre will be back in Hall 3.0 J 103, where every picture tells a story. Talks and discussions, interviews and autographing sessions, exhibitions and events, the International Readers' Corner and Info Point - "Faszination Comic" covers the whole spectrum of what is now an accepted art form. A fascinating and versatile programme presents comics in all their diversity and reflects their rapid development over recent years. And of course, an important contribution to the success of "Faszination Comic" is made by the approximately seventy exhibitors who are based around the Comics Centre, ready to introduce their varied lists to interested trade visitors and fans.

Why don't you take a look at a comic instead!" - Manga: "Hey you old fart, we're not living in the 2nd millennium any more. Your time is up." - Graphic novel (sobbing): "Where did we go wrong in our comics upbringing?!" - Manga (putting feet up on the table): "In everything! You stone-age comics are just so yesterday, man!" Graphic novel: "Holy Hergé! | 12.00 Uhr |
New comics from Eastern Europe
Slide show by comics expert Igor Prassel
European comics production continues to be dominated by the Franco-Belgian countries, while Italy, Spain, England and the Netherlands play their part. In other words, Western European countries. But in recent years - partly influenced by the completely changed political situation -, a comics scene and infrastructure has also developed in the East of the continent, and is attracting increasing attention. Igor Prassel offers an overview.
|
| 13.00 Uhr |
Children's comics at the beginning of the 3rd millennium
Slide show and talk with Petra Lakner and Lewis Trondheim
What's around in terms of "quality" children's comics, apart from the classics in the Tintin and Smurfs mould on the one hand, and manga with Son Goku and Sailor Moon on the other? An up-to-date review - especially useful to booksellers and librarians.
|
| 14.00 Uhr |
How Ebay and Amazon are changing the world of comics
by Chuck Rozanski (in English)
Particularly in the USA, the Internet with its distribution and sales opportunities has been playing an important role in the comics trade for some time now. Chuck Rozansky, whose company website Mile High Comics now deals with a monthly average of 200,000 enquiries and orders, reports on an amazing development.
|
| 15.00 Uhr |
Panel discussion: Manga - wet dreams or simplistic prejudices?
Chaired by Dr. Bernd Dolle-Weinkauff. Panellists: Masaki Okada, Cornelia Abrahamsberg, Sven F. Goergens, Dr. Joachim Kaps, Georg F. W. Tempel
Does the content of manga really only range "From skirt-lifting to S&M", as it was recently phrased in KulturSPIEGEL, or does the subject-matter in Japanese comics express young people' general feelings about life at the beginning of the 3rd millennium? Is the debate surrounding the fascination of manga dominated by the prejudices of those who have always warned of the dangers of too much comics reading, or is there a (topical) justification for making comics content the object of moral valuation?
|
| 18.00 Uhr |
Prospects for the future of "Faszination Comic"
Discussion with Andrea Fiala, Joachim Kehl and Wolfgang Strzyz
Three years are up. Three years of "Faszination Comics" means three years of the Comics Centre and three years' experience with this focal theme. Time to sum it all up, but above all, time to look to the future. All exhibitors, journalists and artists from the comics sector are welcome.

| 12.00 Uhr |
Panel discussion: Comics in the bookshop brisk sales or non-starters?
Chaired by Klaus W. Bramann. Panellists: Barbara Bacher, Monika Mildenberger, Kai-Steffen Schwarz
Just as fast as entire shelves were cleared in bookshops to make way for comics ten years ago, the same shelves were soon "liberated" from them again. Unfortunately, the stories told in pictures did not exactly sell themselves, as it was thought they would in many places. But in fact, it isn't very difficult to make money from comics, often you just need to know what it is best to have on offer. Four professionals share their experiences.
|
| 13.00 Uhr |
The Comics Quartet
Chaired by Dr. Eckart Sackmann. Panellists: Petra Lakner, Frank Neubauer, Andreas Platthaus
Four critics, four comics. Based on the German TV show "Das literarische Quartett", our four specialists discuss the following:
Ralf König: "Wie die Karnickel" (Achterbahn)
Lorenzo Mattotti: "Dr. Jekyll und Mr. Hyde" (Carlsen)
Matz/Luc Jamacon: "Der Killer" (Verlag Thomas Tilsner)
Kaiji Kawaguchi: "Eagle" (Egmont Manga & Anime)
|
| 14.00 Uhr |
When comics grew up. The history of the graphic novel
Slide show and talk, with Abi Melzer and Andreas Platthaus
The sixties are generally perceived as a time of change and new departures. This was also and especially true of comics, appealing in this decade for the first time to a purely adult readership, with quality graphic novels.
|
| 15.00 Uhr |
Panel discussion: The problems of a comics artist in Germany
Chaired by Andreas C. Knigge. Panellists: Isabel Kreitz, Patrick Kunkel, Sascha Nils Marx, Peter Puck
Is it a dream come true to be a comics illustrator in Germany? What sort of conditions are German artists dealing with here? Is the publisher the natural enemy of the creative artist? This event sets out to do away with a few clichés and to clear up some misunderstandings.
|
| Followed by autographing session.

| 12.00 Uhr |
Comics: Art and avantgarde
Panel discussion chaired by Jens Balzer. Panellists: Patrick Bahners, David Basler, Martin tom Dieck
For decades, comics were only sold on newspaper stands. Now they can be found in museums, at art fairs and in trendy galleries. A self-confident artists' scene, calling itself the comics avantgarde, is at work using the materials of the traditional graphic arts and painting. Is this the future of comics? Or is there a danger here of losing what should actually count - a feeling for the mass taste and for a well-told story?
|
|
13.00 Uhr |
Commenting day by day - cartoonists in Germany
Panel discussion chaired by Rolf Dieckmann. Penellists: Gerhard Haderer, Erich Rauschenbach, Wolfgang Sperzel
Everybody knows their pictures and everyone laughs as they hit the nail on the head. But who are actually the artists behind the often witty, sometimes thought-provoking cartoons? A group of the best-known is on stage today in the Comics Centre, one of the &quor;doers" asks the questions.
|
| 14.00 Uhr |
From Wilhelm Busch via e. o. plauen to Hansrudi Wäscher
Slide show by Andreas C. Knigge
Germany has its comics heroes, too. Max und Moritz, Vater und Sohn and Sigurd have their place in history. But what was it really like "back then"? What were the socio-political factors involved in the history of comics? This overview comes from an expert with indepth knowledge of this field.
|
| 15.00 Uhr |
Talking to Sergio Aragonés (in English)
Chaired by Oliver Kalkofe
The American edition of "MAD" is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and parallel to that, Dino entertainment celebrates publishing its 50th edition of "MAD magazine" (including 5 years of "MAD"'s reincarnation in Germany). A good enough reason to invite one of the truly greats from this unusual and influential magazine to come up on stage: Sergio Aragonés, the doyen of non-verbal satire.
|
| Followed by autographing session.
